ST. LOUIS COUNTY: Police save dog from river
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

County police Officer Kevin Martin and Sgt. Daniel O'Neil waded in water up to their necks to rescue a border collie stranded on a dry spot along the Mississippi River near Cliff Cave County Park about 6:30 p.m. Sunday as Officer Jared Ruhland held a light to guide them, officials said.

The owner said the dog, Murphy, broke and chased two deer into woods.

The officers found the dog "whimpering and whining" and too frightened to cross about 40 yards of moving water.

Police said one officer had to lure the dog with a sandwich. Neither the dog nor the officers suffered injuries.
