MARYLAND HEIGHTS > Man held at gunpoint fights off suspect
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
A man fought off a would-be robber who was holding him at gunpoint early Saturday morning. The scuffle led to three men being charged with attempted robbery and armed criminal action. Maryland Heights police said two men with guns approached a man, 21, and woman, 26, at 12:30 a.m. in the driveway of the man's residence in the 100 block of Sungrove Drive. The men demanded the couple drive to an automatic teller machine and withdraw all their money. A third man followed them in a Pontiac Grand Prix that police learned was stolen. While driving to the ATM, the male victim started fighting with one of the robbers over a gun. The fight spilled out into the parking lot of a 7-Eleven convenience store where the robber broke free and ran. A Maryland Heights police officer saw the suspects driving away and drove after them. The suspects crashed into a ditch near Pattonville High School. After a foot chase, one of the suspects was arrested. Police eventually found the others. Three men, Alexander Rhodes II, 20, Derron H. Brooks, 19, and Virgil Johnson, 29, are in the St. Louis County Jail. In addition, Rhodes and Brooks each were charged with two counts of kidnapping.
