William J. Yates, 21, of Potosi, was killed Sunday morning in a head-on crash in Washington County, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.

Yates was driving a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am north on Highway 21 about 8:30 a.m. near Rolling Hills Drive when he crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 1991 Ford Ranger driven by Cleo I. Shepard, 79, of Cadet.

Yates was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

Shepard was flown by helicopter to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur for treatment of serious injuries.
