BENTON, ILL.: Man guilty of digging up artifacts
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Leslie Jones, of Creal Springs, Ill., pleaded guilty Monday in federal court of a felony charge of the illegal excavation, removal or damage of archaeological resources.

He agreed to pay the government $150,326 for excavation damage and the value of artifacts taken from 2004-2007 from the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, near Cairo, Ill.

Officials said most of the artifacts were recovered. Prosecutors agreed to recommend that Jones serve five years on probation, 30 days in jail and 500 hours of community service.
