Phils put brakes on NY
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

PHILADELPHIA — Finally, a World Series in which the result of the All-Star Game might actually come into play.

The carrot accruing to the winning league in the All-Star Game, in this case the American League, was that the World Series would start and, more important, finish in the city of that league's representative. But for the past five years, the American League, winning all the All-Star Games in that span, hasn't been able to utilize that latter advantage because none of those World Series lasted more than five games and returned to the city where it started.

On Monday, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel, the losing National League skipper in this year's All-Star Game in St. Louis, saw his Phillies outlast the New York Yankees 8-6, sending the World Series back to the Bronx. But the Phillies now are faced with winning twice more in New York to retain their world title.

Game 6 in the best-of-seven Series, led by the Yankees three games to two, will be Wednesday night at new Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees will attempt to duplicate what the Cardinals did in the first year at their new ballpark in 2006.

As for some duplications already achieved ...

Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley equaled Reggie Jackson's record for most home runs in a World Series. Utley had his second two-homer game Monday, giving him five for the Series. Jackson's five in 1977 featured three in the sixth and final game.

And on a less glamorous note, the Phillies' Ryan Howard struck out twice more, giving him 12 and tying Kansas City's Willie Wilson for the World Series record set in 1980. That also was achieved in six games.

Monday's pitching matchup, presumably an enticing one, was Arkansas natives A.J. Burnett of the Yankees and Cliff Lee of the Phillies. Like Yankees ace CC Sabathia the night before, Burnett was working on three days' rest, a circumstance that had proved favorable for him.

Burnett had been 4-0 with a 2.33 earned run average with three days' rest, but he had little to offer Monday, lasting just two innings, giving up six runs and walking four. And Burnett didn't cut himself any slack.

"I feel like I let 25 guys down," he said. "I just wasn't able to get it to go where I wanted it to go.

"I had a chance to do something special here tonight. I let all the guys down. I let the city down."

Lee, who dominated the Yankees in Game 1, faced a bottom half of a lineup without designated hitter Hideki Matsui (no DH allowed in National League parks) and center fielder Melky Cabrera, out for the rest of the Series with a hamstring problem aggravated Sunday.

Lee, who has pitched at least into the eighth inning and has had two complete games in five postseason starts this year, had almost no trouble with the bottom half of that lineup, and only middling difficulty with the top half before wobbling in the eighth. In that inning, he allowed three straight hits, including a doubles by Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, whose three runs batted in gave him 18 for the postseason, a Yankees record, and yielded to the bullpen.

"I don't think my command was as good as it's been," said Lee.

The Phillies' relief corps staggered to the finish line before Ryan Madson got Derek Jeter to hit into a key double play in the ninth and then, after allowing Johnny Damon's third hit, he fanned .111-hitting Teixeira.

Manuel said he was trying to give closer Brad Lidge, Sunday's losing pitcher, "a break," but said Lidge "could be back in there."

After the Yankees jumped ahead with a run in the first, Utley, who had 31 homers in the regular season, smacked a three-run drive in the Phils' half.

Manuel scarcely can say enough good things about Utley.

"Sometimes I don't like to talk about him because he doesn't want me to," said Manuel.

But Manuel also said, "Sometimes I tell my players. 'Just play with Chase. If you play with Chase, you've got a chance to be a pretty good player."

A man of few words, Utley said, "Obviously, it's great company (tying Jackson). At some point, not right now, maybe I'll look back and see what kind of special moment it is."

Utley's first homer was the only one of the 10 homers the Phils have hit in the Series to come with anybody on base. It followed a single by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino being hit in the right hand by a pitch. Victorino would leave the game before it was over with a bruised finger, and his availabillity for Game 6 would be at least somewhat doubtful.

Wednesday's matchup is slated to be one of two esteemed veterans, Pedro Martinez of the Phillies and the Yankees' Andy Pettitte. Martinez already is locked in and Pettitte would be pitching on three days' rest, if able.

"If Andy feels good (today), he's going to go on Wednesday," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

As for a potential Game 7, Lee, who would be on two days' rest, said, "I'm available."

Manuel said he would talk to Lee but welcomed some intervention by the weatherman.

"What's that old saying — 'Spahn and Sain and pray for rain?' Get an off day tomorrow; maybe it'll rain the next day," said Manuel.

"I can get him on three days' (rest) like you guys are talking about."

Then Manuel, who has seemed uptight lately when some of his strategies have been questioned, closed by addressing Los Angeles coach Larry Bowa's suggestion on radio Monday that the Phillies were able to steal signs at Citizens Bank Park.

"I can tell you this," said Manuel, laughing. "If I can steal signs, I will.

"We don't have their signs and we're not stealing their signs. But we are trying."
