Matchup: Illini vs. Minnesota
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
When Illinois runs If the Illini can find the spark that led to 312 rushing yards in the second half against Michigan, they'll be in good shape. But the running game remains a work in progress. Mikel Leshoure has become the one proven entity, gaining 350 yards the past three games while displaying big-play ability. Juice Williams regained some of his potency last week. Minnesota is 10th in the Big Ten in run defense. When Illinois passes Williams was efficient last week when he had to throw only 11 passes. He was accurate and was allowed to throw down field a few times with success. That weapon that has been sorely missing from the offense all season. Arrelious Benn's nagging ankle injury could limit his production; the same goes for tight end Michael Hoomanawanui. Jacob Charest remains an option if the coaches want a change of pace. When Minnesota runs This is a weak point for the Gophers, who rank last in the Big Ten with an average of 104 rushing yards a game. Although the Illini are last in the conference in run defense, they have improved in recent weeks, holding teams to 4.1 yards a carry. Not good, but better. Michigan managed only 113 on the ground. Duane Bennett leads Minnesota with 342 yards with six rushing touchdowns. When Minnesota passes Quarterback Adam Weber has a problem with interceptions, having thrown 12, which is one more than he has touchdown passes. But he has the potential to break out as he did last week with more than 400 passing yards and five TDs against Michigan State. Minnesota could be hurt by the loss of receiver Eric Decker, who is out for the season. The Illini secondary is young and getting younger.
