American wins New York City Marathon Meb Keflezighi became the first U.S. man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds to beat Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya by 41 seconds. Morocco's Jaouad Gharib finished third and Ryan Hall of the United States was fourth on a day when six Americans were in the top 10 for the first time since 1979. Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia captured the women's race in 2:28:52. Ludmila Petrova of Russia was the runner-up while Christelle Daunay of France was third. (AP) Serena tops Venus — Second-seeded Serena Williams won the season-ending WTA Sony in Doha, Qatar, after beating big sister Venus 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the title match. Serena broke twice in the first set and never faced a break point. She looked sharper than the seventh-seeded Venus in every facet of a match that featured few long rallies and little of the spectacular tennis the two have provided in some of their previous meetings. It was Serena's fourth consecutive win over her sister this year. Stakhovsky is St. Petersburg Open champion — Qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky won his second career title, saving a match point before beating eighth-seeded Horacio Zeballos 2-6, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (7) in the St. Petersburg Open in Russia. (AP) Two women accuse Raiders coach of violent behavior — The former wife of Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable and a recent girlfriend told ESPN he has a history of violent behavior toward women, and asked that he seek help for his anger. Sandy Cable and Marie Lutz said on "Outside the Lines" that Cable hit them during relationships going back more than 20 years. Cable told The Associated Press the only time he struck a woman was more than 20 years ago, when he said Sandy Cable committed adultery. Cable said in a statement he slapped her with an open hand and he's "felt sorrow about that moment ever since." The Raiders coach recently was accused by assistant coach Randy Hanson of breaking his jaw during a fight in a coaches meeting. (AP) Fisher tops Kim in World Match Play final — Ross Fisher won the 36-hole World Match Play Championship final by beating Anthony Kim 4 and 3. Fisher eagled the 22nd hole and birdied the next to put him 3-up at the Finca Cortesin golf course in Casares, Spain. Kim won the next hole before missing putts on the 25th and 26th holes, allowing Fisher to pull away. Robert Allenby of Australia beat Masters champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina to finish third. (AP) Cook wins Champions Tour finale, Roberts takes points title — John Cook won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championships by 5 strokes for his second Champions Tour title in three weeks, while Loren Roberts held on to win the season points title. Cook closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 22-under 266 at Sonoma (Calif.) Golf Club. Roberts had a 66 to tie for sixth at 13-under 275. (AP) SLU men fall to Dayton — Dayton converted a first-half penalty kick and held off visiting St. Louis University for a 1-0 victory in men's soccer. The Billikens (10-6-0, 5-2-0 Atlantic 10) are now tied for third in the league standings with St. Bonaventure, trailing only Dayton and Fordham.
