Looper becomes free agent — The Milwaukee Brewers declined their $6.5 million mutual option on Braden Looper, electing to pay the pitcher a $1 million buyout. Looper later filed for free agency. After signing with the Brewers as a free agent on Feb. 12, the former Cardinal went 14-7 with a 5.22 ERA and set a franchise record with 39 homers allowed, which led the majors. (AP) Giants prospect stripped of U.S. visa — Pablo Peguero, the San Francisco Giants' representative for Latin America, said top prospect Angel Villalona, 19, can't join the team in the United States because the U.S. Embassy revoked his travel visa after he was charged with killing a man in the Dominican Republic. A Dominican prosecutor has said Villalona offered the family of the man he allegedly killed nearly $140,000 to drop the case against him. He alleged the first baseman paid $55,000 and expected to offer another $83,000. (AP) Mariners, Jack Wilson agree on deal — Shortstop Jack Wilson, acquired by Seattle in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in July, agreed to a $10 million, two-year contract with the Mariners. Wilson hit .224 with one home run in 31 games for Seattle. He missed extended time due to a sore hamstring and bruised right heel. (AP) Tiger leads Australian Masters — Tiger Woods shot a 68 in the second round of the Australian Masters in Melbourne to build a 3-shot lead at Kingston Heath, his fourth tournament in a row with at least a share of the 36-hole lead. Woods was at 10-under 134. (AP) Leonard leads at Disney — Justin Leonard shot an 8-under 64 in the second round of the Children's Miracle Network Classic at Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., to surge to the top of the leaderboard at 8-under 132 in the final PGA Tour event of the season. Former world No. 1 David Duval missed the cut and was among those who will probably lose their PGA Tour cards for next year. Duval finished 5 over par and near the bottom in the tournament. Duval's runner-up finish at the U.S. Open this year and his 2001 British Open championship will get him into the first three majors next year. (AP) Truex earns pole for Sprint Cup race — Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for Sunday's O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz., by turning a lap at 135.120 mph in his No. 1 Chevrolet. Kurt Busch qualified second at 134.579 mph in the No. 2 Dodge. (AP) Nadal wins — Second-seeded Rafael Nadal set up a semifinal match-up against third-seeded Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Also advancing were 13th-seeded Radek Stepanek and 15th-seeded Gael Monfils. (AP) SLU men reach A-10 title match — St. Louis University's Tim Ream scored with four minutes to play to lift the visiting Billikens to a 3-2 win over Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship men's soccer semifinals. Stephen Bortolon and Mike Roach also scored for the Billikens, who will play Dayton on Sunday in the A-10 title match. The winner of that game earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
