Standard carries for 300 in win
SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
MEHLVILLE — Everyone on the field and in the stands at Mehlville High School's Jack Jordan Stadium on Monday night knew Chaminade running back Rob Standard was going to get the ball. But the defending Missouri Class 5 champions from Hazelwood East couldn't stop him. Standard rushed 51 times for 300 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 27.9 seconds remaining to lift Chaminade to an incredible 24-21 come-from-behind victory over Hazelwood East in a Class 5 sectional playoff game. "They knew I was going to get the ball a lot in this game, and I knew it," Standard said. "I was mentally prepared and physically prepared for it. We worked hard all week. I thank my linemen and my fullback for opening the holes." Standard, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior, entered the game with 2,311 yards rushing and 34 touchdowns this season. He kept pounding the ball Monday despite facing eight men in the box on almost every play. "I don't think it gets a whole lot bigger, once you get in the playoff playing the defending state champions, great football program, great coaches," Chaminade coach Doug Taylor said. "The kid is unbelievable." Chaminade (10-3), which will play Webster Groves or Eureka in Saturday's quarterfinals, trailed Hazelwood East 21-14 going into the fourth quarter. But the Red Devils got a 41-yard field goal from Mason Hutson with 9:31 remaining and the defense came up with two interceptions in the final minutes. Spencer Byrne made an interception along the sideline with 3:40 left to give the Red Devils the ball back for their game-winning drive. "We did what we did best, we ran the ball," Taylor said. "We were able to throw it enough to keep them off. We couldn't stop them, and then lo and behold we get two interceptions in the fourth quarter." Hazelwood East (6-5), which had won six consecutive games, could not engineer a comeback in the final seconds, despite a strong game from sophomore quarterback Trey Hill. Hill completed 13 of 25 passes for 202 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran 18 times for 180 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Walter Powell caught nine passes for 153 yards and two scores. "Chaminade did a great job," Hazelwood East coach Mike Jones said. "They kept fighting and kept fighting and the team that had the ball last had an opportunity to win the game. We had opportunities to stop them and we didn't."
