Miracle win for Webster Groves in football playoffs
SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
WEBSTER GROVES • When Chaminade’s Mason Hutson kicked a 48-yard field goal with 6.9 seconds left in Saturday’s Class 5 quarterfinal game, it looked like Webster Groves’ once-promising season was over. The Statesmen, the top-ranked team in Class 5, trailed 29-28 and had time for one last play. Then Derrick Dilworth found sophomore wide receiver Demetrius Robinson streaking down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown pass that gave Webster Groves a dramatic 34-29 come-from-behind victory and sent fans rushing onto the grass at Moss Field. "It was all verticals and throw the ball as deep as you can," Webster Groves coach Cliff Ice said. "I thought they’d have more guys back. ... I thought our state championship run was over, but you never know." Webster Groves (11-0), which defeated Chaminade 30-7 during districts, advances to the semifinals next weekend where the Statesmen will play either Parkway North (9-1) or Parkway Central (10-2). Chaminade (9-4), which was led by junior running back Rob Standard’s 210 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 37 carries, led 7-6 at halftime on Saturday before both teams got going offensively. The score was tied at 14-14 after a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Webster quarterback Desi Brown and then a 7-yard touchdown run by Standard. But then the host Statesmen got a 45-yard touchdown on a shuffle pass from Marquis Clemons to Aaron Daniels and a 16-yard run by Brown to take a 28-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Chaminade rallied in the fourth. Standard scored on a 12-yard run, which was his 40th touchdown of the season and 71st in his three-year varsity career, but the Red Devils missed the extra point. After a 9-yard touchdown pass from Christian Suntrup to Matt Greer with 41.3 seconds left, Chaminade went for two but Suntrup was sacked and Webster still led 28-26. The Red Devils recovered an onsides kick and on fourth down the 48-yard field goal attempt by Hutson, who lives in Webster Groves, was good after scraping the back of the cross bar with 6.9 seconds remaining. "My stomach dropped," Dilworth said. "I honestly thought the game was over," Robinson said. After Hutson’s kickoff went into the end zone for a touchback, Webster Groves had one more chance with 80 yards to go. Then Dilworth, who helped the Statesmen win the state basketball championship when he was a sophomore, found Robinson down the left sideline and the rest is history. "We come back and give ourselves the opportunity to win and then we just let them throw a ball by us without having anybody there," Chaminade coach Doug Taylor said.
