Top 25: Navy sinks Notre Dame; Florida prevails

Navy did it to Notre Dame again — and this loss to the Midshipmen is even more costly. Craig Schaefer sacked Jimmy Clausen in the end zone with 60 seconds left Saturday to give Navy a nine-point lead and it held on for a 23-21 victory, its second in a row at Notre Dame. No. 19 Notre Dame scored with 24 seconds left on a 31-yard pass from Jimmy Clausen to Golden Tate and the PAT cut the lead to two, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds. The last time an unranked Navy team beat a ranked Notre Dame team was in 1936. "It's a heartbreaking loss," Clausen said. Navy gained a spot in the Texas Bowl but its victory celebration was more subdued than two years ago, when the Midshipmen ended a 43-game losing streak to the Irish by winning 46-44 in three overtimes. "We'd done it before and we went into this game not really placing as much emphasis or too much importance on it," said Navy linebacker Ram Vela, who had an interception and fumble recovery. Ricky Dobbs threw a TD pass and ran for a TD and Vince Murray had a 25-yard TD run for the Midshipmen. Two years ago when Navy beat Notre Dame, the Irish were in a 3-9 season. But this loss effectively ends any hope Notre Dame had for its first BCS berth since 2006. No. 1 Florida 27, Vanderbilt 3 — Tim Tebow ran for a TD and threw for another as the Gators won at home in a lackluster outing. Florida extended its winning streak to 19 games but struggled on offense again. Oregon State 31, No. 23 California 14 — Sean Canfield threw for 342 yards and two TDs and ran for a score to lift the visiting Beavers over California, which lost tailback Jahvid Best to a concussion. He landed on his head in the end zone after leaping over a defender for a TD in the second quarter. He was taken to an emergency room, but had movement in his extremities. No. 6 TCU 55, San Diego State 12 — Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more as visiting Texas Christian romped to its 11th consecutive victory and remained in the chase for a BCS berth by staying undefeated. The Horned Frogs jumped in front with touchdowns on five of their first six possessions. No. 10 Georgia Tech 30, Wake Forest 27 (OT) — Jonathan Dwyer rushed for a career-best 189 yards and Josh Nesbitt scored on a 3-yard run in overtime, leading the Yellow Jackets to a win at home. After the defense held Wake Forest to a field goal on its possession in OT, Tech faced fourth down at the 5 with less than a yard to go and coach Paul Johnson decided to go for the win and got it. Nesbitt powered for 2 yards and scored on the next play. No. 14 Pittsburgh 37, Syracuse 10 — Greg Williams' 51-yard interception return for a TD late in the first half got the Panthers going and they pulled away to win at home. No. 16 Miami 52, Virginia 17 — Graig Cooper ran for a career-best 152 yards and a TD and Damien Berry ran for two second-half scores as the Hurricanes rolled at home. No. 17 Utah 45, New Mexico 14 — Jordan Wynn passed for 297 yards and two TDs in his first college start to spark Utah at home. No. 21 Arizona 48, Washington State 7 — Travis Cobb returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD to set the tone as the Wildcats toyed with the visiting Cougars. No. 25 BYU 52, Wyoming 0 — Max Hall threw for 312 yards and four TDs in just over two quarters and visiting Brigham Young gained its first shutout this year.
