Virginia coach wins No. 700 — Debbie Ryan earned her 700th victory Friday night, as No. 14 Virginia got 15 second-half points from Monica Wright in a 68-57 win over Maryland-Baltimore County. Ryan, in her 33rd season at Virginia, is the seventh active Division I women's coach to reach the 700-win mark. She joins Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Rutgers' C. Vivian Stringer, North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell, Stanford's Tara VanDerveer, Montana's Robin Selvig and Georgia's Andy Landers. No. 2 Stanford 89, Old Dominion 56 — Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cardinal opened their season with a victory on the road. No. 3 Ohio State 91, Eastern Illinois 68 — Jantel Lavender had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes to victory in Columbus, Ohio, in the first round of the preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. No. 5 North Carolina 88, College of Charleston 57 — Laura Broomfield and She'la White scored 14 points each to help the Tar Heels win at home in the season opener for both teams. Dayton 77, No. 10 Michigan State 74 — Kristin Daugherty scored 17 points for the host Flyers in the season opener for both teams. No. 13 Oklahoma 108, Mercer 66 — Danielle Robinson and Amanda Thompson each scored 17 points as the host Sooners opened the post-Courtney Paris era with a victory. Coming off the second Final Four appearance in school history, the Sooners (1-0) struggled for the first 7½ minutes before taking the lead for good with a 15-0 run. Temple 82, Illinois 78 (OT) — Senior Jenna Smith had 24 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort as the Illini opened their season with a loss in Philadelphia.
