Jacksonville Jaguars offense proves inconsistent
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

The Jacksonville Jaguars have enjoyed feasts and suffered through famine. In their past three games, the Jags topped 30 points in victories over Houston and Tennessee, then fell to Seattle 41-0 Sunday. The shutout was just the third in franchise history.

"I think the field position in Seattle didn't play to our advantage," former Rams receiver Torry Holt said on a teleconference Wednesday. "They were able to pin their ears back and fire off on us. It killed us. But to come out of that game without scoring any points was a surprise to all of us."

Coach Jack Del Rio said the Jaguars plan to rebound from the shutout "the same way you do from a big win. You get ready for the next opportunity. We had a rough day. We'll pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off."

COMING UP GOOSE EGGS

Jacksonville's next three opportunities seem tailor-made for a rebound. The Rams, Titans and Chiefs have a composite record of 0-15, but Del Rio said the Jaguars wouldn't take any of them lightly.

"There's not anything that needs to be said. We understand that there's talent everywhere in the league," Del Rio said. Noting that Jacksonville has a bye after facing the Rams on Sunday, he added this about the Chiefs and Titans, "They may not be (winless) when you get to them. You just don't know. Right now, we have the Rams up. We'll worry about next week, next week."

AREA TIES

In addition to Holt, a pair of former St. Louisans have made an impact with the Jaguars. Defensive end Atiyyah Ellison, a graduate of Parkway South and Missouri, was signed off the 49ers' practice squad in December, started the past two games and had six tackles in Seattle. Cornerback Scott Starks, a graduate of Hazelwood East, was drafted by the Jags in the third round of the 2005 draft. Starks, who plays nickel back and on special teams, has nine tackles this season but missed last week because of a hip injury.

"(Atiyyah) has found a home here. He's been very solid in the things we've asked him to do," Del Rio said. "Scotty's been a little banged up. We've been missing him, but he's working his way back."

INJURY UPDATE

Starks participated in portions of the Jags' practice Wednesday, as did S Sean Considine (groin), LB Justin Durant (hip), DT John Henderson (shoulder) and OL Maurice Williams (knee). Missing practice were DT Greg Peterson (knee), CB Rashean Mathis (hip) and LB Adam Seward (groin).
