NFL roundup: Colts trip Texans
FROM NEWS SERVICES
Colts 20, Texans 17 — Peyton Manning delivered another milestone performance, this time in a 20-17 victory over Houston, and Indianapolis hung on to win when Kris Brown missed a 42-yard field goal as time expired. That allowed the Colts to win their 17th straight regular-season game. Manning, the three-time MVP, tied Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton for fourth in career victories (125) and became the first player in league history to throw for 40,000 yards in one decade. Tight end Dallas Clark caught 14 passes, the third-highest single-game total by an NFL tight end, and helped Indy open a 3½-game lead in the AFC South over second-place Houston. After struggling early, the visiting Texans had two chances to win it or force overtime. But Matt Schaub, under pressure from Gary Brackett, was intercepted by Clint Session in Colts territory with 2:13 to go. Then after the defense forced a three-and-out, Schaub moved Houston into scoring position again only to see Brown push his field-goal attempt to the left. Though Indy dominated early, the Colts couldn't finish drives and never led by more than 13-0 — fueled by a TD catch from Joseph Addai. Patriots 27, Dolphins 17 — Randy Moss sped to a 71-yard TD after grabbing a short pass over the middle and shoving rookie cornerback Vontae Davis out of his way, sparking New England to victory at home as it tightened its grip in the AFC East race. The TD — and a 2-point conversion connection between Tom Brady and Moss — put the Patriots ahead 24-17 with 3:15 left in the third quarter, and the defense shut down Miami thereafter. Bengals 17, Ravens 7 — Cincinnati scored on its first three possessions, then held on to win at home to stay atop the AFC North. Cedric Benson ran for 117 yards and a TD against the Ravens, who hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher for 39 consecutive games until Benson broke that streak last month by piling up 120 in Cincinnati's victory in Baltimore. Titans 34, 49ers 27 — Six plays after his 81-yard touchdown run was overturned when it was ruled he stepped out of bounds, Chris Johnson took a pitch from Vince Young and ran 2 yards for a go-ahead score to lead visiting Tennessee to victory. Johnson converted on fourth and inches for his TD, making up for the six points that were negated a few minutes earlier after it was determined he hit the sideline at the San Francisco 40. The TD gave the Titans a 24-20 lead with just over 7 minutes to go, and they never were caught again. Johnson finished with 135 yards. Falcons 31, Redskins 17 — Michael Turner ran for a season-high 166 yards, breaking away from former teammate DeAngelo Hall on a 58-yard TD that finished off Washington early in the fourth quarter, as Atlanta snapped a two-game losing streak by winning at home. Turner also scored from 30 yards out as the Falcons built a 24-3 halftime lead. Jaguars 24, Chiefs 21 — David Garrard threw for 264 yards, including a 61-yard TD pass to Mike Sims-Walker, to propel Jacksonville to victory at home. Kansas City managed little offense until Matt Cassel threw two TD passes to Chris Chambers, who was claimed off waivers Tuesday from San Diego, in the final three minutes. The last came with about a minute to play before Jacksonville's Greg Jones recovered an onside kick and the Jags ran out the clock. Seahawks 32, Lions 20 — Matt Hasselbeck rallied Seattle from a 17-0 deficit with a franchise-record 39 completions, and Seattle pulled away to avoid the embarrassment of being the first home team to lose to the Lions in 25 months. Josh Wilson returned an interception 61 yards for a score with 22 seconds left, the last of five thrown by Detroit's Matthew Stafford.
