NFL notebook: Head of NOW wants Cable to be punished

The National Organization for Women called on the Oakland Raiders to suspend coach Tom Cable while the team investigates allegations he has a history of violent behavior toward women.

NOW President Terry O'Neill praised the Raiders for undertaking a "serious evaluation" of charges made by Cable's first wife, Sandy Cable, and former girlfriend, Marie Lutz, that the coach physically abused them at various times during their relationships. But she said Cable, who acknowledged striking Sandy Cable with an open hand more than 20 years ago, should be suspended while that probe proceeds.

"Tom Cable's history of violence against women raises a question: Why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?" O'Neill said in a statement. "Mr. Cable admits having battered his first wife, and he stands accused of battering two other intimate partners as well ...''

The Raiders had no comment.

Man convicted in shooting — A jury in Jacksonville, Fla., convicted an ex-con of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of former Jaguars offensive lineman Richard Collier in 2008. The jury deliberated 2 hours, 45 minutes before returning its verdict against Tyrone Hartsfield, 33, at the end of a nine-day trial.

He faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced in December. Collier watched much of the closing arguments while seated in his wheelchair in the courtroom gallery. He was shot six times as he waited in his car outside a Jacksonville apartment building and was paralyzed from the waist down. His left leg also was amputated.

Collier said he was able to endure because of faith and family. "My life is good," he said.

Steeler might not play — Steelers safety Ryan Clark probably won't play Monday in Denver because of a rare blood condition that nearly caused him to die after playing there two years ago.

He was hospitalized then when complications from sickle-cell trait prevented oxygen from flowing into his spleen. He needed operations to remove his spleen and gall bladder.

Clark is among the estimated 1 percent of those affected by the condition who react poorly to exerting themselves in high altitude.

Elsewhere — Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck fully participated in practice a day after sitting out to rest broken ribs. ... Colts cornerback Marlin Jackson might miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee while practicing Thursday. ... Lions running back Kevin Smith returned to practice after sitting out the previous day because of a shoulder injury. And receiver Calvin Johnson, who has missed Detroit's past two games because of a knee injury, also had a limited practice.
