Rams will wear 'throwback' uniforms vs. Vikings
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
As the players filed into the locker room after Friday's practice, equipment manager Todd Hewitt and the rest of the Rams' equipment staff stripped off the "new century gold" horns from each helmet and replaced them with the canary yellow decals of a decade gone by. It's "Throwback Sunday" for the Rams when Minnesota comes to town for a noon kickoff at the Edward Jones Dome. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the franchise's only Super Bowl championship, the Rams will wear the uniform style from that magical 1999 season. Sunday marks the first time since the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995 that the team will wear throwbacks. They will wear them again in their Dec. 20 home game against the Houston Texans. The Rams put in their request to the NFL to wear the throwbacks way back in March 2008. Hewitt ordered the uniforms last April. About 35 jerseys were sent out for tailoring once the throwback shipment arrived. "The players love it; they think it's great," Hewitt said. "They think we should go back to these jerseys. A lot of them do. It's like anything else. It's a change. So they like the change from wearing the same thing all the time." For defensive end Leonard Little, they're not throwback uniforms, just old ones. He's the only current member of the Rams to have worn the uniforms as a member of the '98 and '99 Rams. "I know we won a Super Bowl, did some things in those jerseys," he said. "But our main focus right now is trying to win a game." INJURY UPDATE After missing Thursday's practice because of a sore hamstring, starting wide receiver Keenan Burton was back at work Friday. Burton was listed as "limited participation" for Friday's practice but got in a fair amount of work and seemed to be running OK. Burton was listed as questionable for the Minnesota game. The Rams' other starting wide receiver, Donnie Avery, also is listed as questionable because of hamstring issues. But Avery is expected to start Sunday. Wide receiver Ruvell Martin isn't as fortunate. Martin, also suffering an injured hamstring, sat out Friday's practice and is listed as doubtful. Thus, Nate Jones should make his NFL debut, joining Avery, Burton, and Danny Amendola as the four available wideouts. At safety, with James Butler (knee) out and Anthony Smith (Achilles tendon) doubtful, it looks like David Roach will be the only backup Sunday. Marc Bulger (shoulder) is questionable but may be the No. 2 QB Sunday. Tackle Jason Smith (knee) is questionable but may dress Sunday in a backup role.
