NFL roundup: Surging Chargers beat Eagles
FROM NEWS SERVICES

Chargers 31, Eagles 23 — LaDainian Tomlinson isn't finished yet and neither is the AFC West race. Tomlinson scored twice and ran for 96 yards in perhaps his best game of the season and the San Diego Chargers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 31-23 Sunday to pull into a tie atop the AFC West with the slumping Denver Broncos.

Asked if something gave him motivation, Tomlinson got emotional.

"My wife is pregnant, I found out before the game,'' he said. "She left me a gift in my locker. It said, 'Open immediately.' I thought it was a necklace. It was a pregnancy test."

The child will be the couple's first. LaTorsha Tomlinson suffered a miscarriage in 2005.

The Chargers and Broncos, both 6-3, play next Sunday in Denver. Four weeks ago, the Chargers appeared dead, 3½ games back after losing 34-23 to the Broncos.

Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb threw for a season-high 450 yards, completing 35 of 55, and two late touchdowns. He was intercepted in the end zone by Antonio Cromartie on the game's last play.

Redskins 27, Broncos 17 — Ladell Betts, playing because Clinton Portis was inactive (concussion), scored on a 1-yard run with 2:44 to play to help seal the outcome as Washington ended a four-game losing streak. The visiting Broncos lost their third straight and had to play the second half with Chris Simms at quarterback after Kyle Orton left because of an ankle injury.

Dolphins 25, Buccaneers 23 — Chad Henne directed a 77-yard scoring drive in the final 1:10, and Dan Carpenter kicked a 25-yard field goal with 10 seconds left to lift Miami. That spoiled the visiting Bucs' comeback led by Josh Freeman, who rallied his team in the fourth quarter for the second time in two NFL starts. The rookie shook off an awful first half and led his team to a pair of late TDs. The Dolphins won despite losing running back Ronnie Brown to an ankle injury in the third quarter.

Panthers 28, Falcons 19 — Jake Delhomme went turnover-free for the third straight game, finding Steve Smith for two touchdown passes as Carolina held on to win at home after building a 21-0 halftime lead. The win wasn't sealed until Richard Marshall intercepted a pass from Matt Ryan and Jonathan Stewart followed with a 45-yard touchdown run with 2:07 left. That turn of events came after Jason Elam missed a 34-yard field goal that would have given Atlanta the lead.

Titans 41, Bills 17 — Chris Johnson ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and caught nine passes for 100 more as Tennessee pulled away in the second half at home to win its third game in a row after an 0-6 start. Johnson became the NFL's first back to top 1,000 rushing yards this season. Vince Young also threw for a touchdown and finished with 210 yards passing.

Vikings 27, Lions 10 — Brett Favre passed for a season-high 344 yards, 201 to Sidney Rice, to help Minnesota send Detroit to its 31st loss in its last 33 games and their 12th straight in Minneapolis. The Vikings' Adrian Peterson carried 18 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Jaguars 24, Jets 22 — Josh Scobee kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired after the Jaguars passed up a touchdown to drain the clock (see Highlight Reel, Page B7), lifting Jacksonville on the road. It was the fifth loss in the last six games for New York.

Chiefs 16, Raiders 10 — Jamaal Charles scored on a 44-yard run for Kansas City's first rushing touchdown of the season and the Chiefs used a late interception to win their seventh straight game in Oakland, a quirk for a team that has won just five of its past 35 games. Three of those wins were in Oakland.
