NFL NOTEBOOK: Chiefs cut troubled Johnson

Chiefs cut Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs finally ran out of patience with running back Larry Johnson's off-the-field problems, releasing him Monday just as he was due to come back from his second suspension in a year. Johnson, who will turn 30 next week, was just 75 yards away from breaking Priest Holmes' team rushing record.

The decision by the Chiefs (1-7) was not a surprise. A No. 1 draft choice out of Penn State in 2003, Johnson was one of the best running backs in the NFL in 2005 and 2006, rushing for more than 1,700 yards in each of those Pro Bowl seasons. But often angry and sullen, he was dogged by controversy and frequently at odds with coaches and fans.

The capping incidents were recent disparaging comments about his coach and a gay slur. He originally was suspended for two weeks, but that eventually was cut in half.

Behind a poor offensive line this year, Johnson has gained 2.7 yards per carry and appeared not to have the quickness and punishing power he had earlier in his career.

Hasselbeck plans to play — Seahawks coach Jim Mora said quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be limited in practice most of the week but will start Sunday against Arizona. Hasselbeck, who already had broken ribs, hurt his throwing shoulder while making a tackle after he threw an interception Sunday. He often threw almost sidearm later in that game to avoid more pain. Mora said tests showed no structural damage in the shoulder.

Bengals lose Henry — Bengals receiver Chris Henry will miss the rest of the season after having surgery Monday on his broken left forearm. He is fourth among Bengals receivers this season with 12 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns.

Panthers' Davis is out — Linebacker Thomas Davis, perhaps Carolina's most productive defensive player, is out for the season because of a torn knee ligament he suffered Sunday. Davis, a 2005 first-round pick from Georgia, ranks second on the team in tackles (69) and has two sacks and an interception.

Edwards improves — Bills QB Trent Edwards expects to be cleared to play this weekend after being sidelined nearly a month recovering from a concussion. Coach Dick Jauron has not said whether Edwards will regain his starting job once healthy. The Bills are 2-1 under his replacement, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Raiders get healthier — Running back Darren McFadden, wide receiver Chaz Schilens, left guard Robert Gallery and right tackle Cornell Green returned to practice for the Raiders after being sidelined recently because of injuries and are expected to play this weekend against Kansas City.

Elsewhere — Backup Giants linebacker Gerris Wilkinson will be sidelined up to two months following surgery to repair a dislocated right wrist. ... Packers linebacker Aaron Kampman played most of Sunday's loss at Tampa Bay with a concussion, and his availability for the Packers' next game is uncertain.
