Year one: the kindergarten experience

This is one in a series of stories in which Journal reporters are following the same kindergarten student throughout the school year.

We'll be printing occasional articles about their experiences, from the first day to the last.

Using an iPad is old school for Collinsville kindergartner Karley Jo Jackson.

"I know all the apps because I have one at home," she said.

Karley Jo, 5, is working with her third grade "buddy" Mackenzie Hayhurst at Twin Echo Elementary School.

The school received 25 iPads last year to use for math and reading instruction. The thin electronic devices are equipped with applications that let kids interact with educational lessons. Teachers can check out the set for classroom use.

"We find textbook companies are creating apps to go along with their curriculum," said Principal Julie Haake. "And it's giving teachers more tools to stay up on current technology."

Kindergartners are paired with older students, who help the younger kids with learning how to operate the iPads. The partnerships also help teach kindergartners patience, sharing and responsibility, said third-grade teacher Christy Josias. It also builds confidence, she said.

"The little ones will see their buddies in the hallway and get so excited and wave, and it makes (the third-graders) feel good," she said.

On Friday, the buddies were working together on spelling words, maneuvering mazes, and drawing pictures — all at the touch of their fingertips.

A picture of a fox appeared on the screen with a big "F" next to it. Karley Jo used her finger to place the "F" in the first position. Then Mackenzie helped her drag the "O" and the "X" next to it. Karley Jo showed a sly smile when Mackenzie told her "good job."

"Some of these kids, you wouldn't expect them to be so sweet and caring," Josias said of her third-graders. "But they really come of out their shells when they work with the younger ones."
