St. Paul's offers new preschool class

St. Paul's Lutheran School in Troy will offer a new preschool class for 3-year-old children for spring 2013. The class starts Jan. 7, 2013, and runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, noon-3 p.m. Students must be 3-years-old and potty-trained. Before and after care from 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. is also available. Troy student named Lincoln laureate

Jessica Thompson, of Troy, has been named a Student Laureate for 2012 by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. The senior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was selected for the annual honor for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. 

Scholarship honors former SIUE geography chair

A $476,000 gift from the estate of Melvin Kazeck will establish a scholarship in the former professor's name at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The scholarship will be in the geography department. Kazeck served as chair of the department before his 1976 retirement. The donation will fund two full-time graduate student assistantships. Kazeck died in February.

DREAM Scholarships available

The Illinois DREAM Act has created the Illinois DREAM Scholarship Commission which is seeking applications. Scholarships are available for students attending two- and four-year colleges. Amounts up to $2,000 available for those attending two-year institutions. Amounts up to $6,000 available to those attending four-year colleges. The focus of these scholarships is on undocumented students. Visit www.illinoisdreamfund.org.

McKendree seeks Veterans' Day tribute volunteers

McKendree University is seeking volunteers to read the names of 1,750 fallen veterans from all military conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the present Nov. 9 at a tribute ceremony at the university, The "Reading of the Fallen" is taking place at more than 600 sites including sites in the Metro East. The service will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the campus quad flagpole. Each volunteer will be asked to read about 50 names. The reading should last from noon to 4 p.m. Those interested in taking part should e-mail rarieger@mckendree.edu. The event will continue Nov. 11.

McKendree robotics contest returns

A robotics team from Glen Carbon will be participating in the 2012-2013 First Tech Challenge and First LEGO League qualifying tournaments at McKendree University in Lebanon Nov. 17-18. The events, which run 8 a.m.-4 p.m., will take place in the Melvin Price Convocation Center Gymnasium on Alton Street in Lebanon. Spectators welcome both days after noon. Free.
