Illinois State Police

State wide, 718 crashes have led to 776 deaths so far this year. The Metro East area (including Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties) has contributed 48 of the fatal crashes resulting in 52 deaths. Only three of those crashes were caused by things outside of the drivers' control (six crashes didn't have a contributory cause listed, two were listed as n/a and in three crashes, the cause was listed as "unable to determine"). Drivers failing to yield the right-of-way, following to close, speeding and improper lane use account for the majority of the causes of fatal crashes in the Metro East. Alcohol also plays a factor as it was involved in 12 of the fatal crashes. The majority of fatal crashes, 17, happened on city streets, with 15 crashes on state highways.

The State Police remind drivers to be cautious during the holiday season.

The police blotter is compiled from information provided by local police departments. All suspects are presumed innocent until convicted.
