What's next: Nameoki Road

Granite City's economic development director said several developers are interested in creating fast food restaurants and pharmacies along Nameoki Road.

Jon Ferry said discussions are in the early stages and would not disclose specifics. He said the developers have been attracted by traffic volumes, which typically number about 30,000 vehicles a day.

Space is very tight along the street and the city is looking at ways to add more businesses, he said.

Ferry said the city is going to determine what property owners are willing to sell. The city could then buy options on the property, which could then be transferred to developers.

"Even if we don't put an option on it at least we know what the price is. We can put that information together and send that out to the developers," he said.

Ferry said developers are also interested in Illinois State Route 3. He expects additional interest once the expansion to the Walmart Supercenter is finished.

Commercial and industrial construction in Granite City is on track to top more than $50 million in 2011, according to city figures.
