Laura Thomas of Lindbergh High School in Crestwood was named a Peabody Logos Leader in Education for the 2011-12 school year, and awarded $1,000 for her compassion and commitment to students.
As a math teacher, Thomas is dedicated to helping her students learn how to communicate mathematics by reasoning and problem solving, as well as working cooperatively as a class.
Recognizing the need for a more rigorous mathematics course, Thomas spent many hours developing curriculum for the newly added Calculus BC class, which allows advanced students to earn up to two college calculus credits. Thomas is national board certified in mathematics, and has led her algebra students to achieve the highest scores in the state. She also serves as the professional development liaison for the mathematics department.
The Peabody Logos Leaders in Education program rewards dedicated education professionals — from teachers and coaches to librarians and counselors — who inspire and motivate youth to succeed. Award recipients are selected throughout the school year by a committee of top educators and business leaders.
In partnership with Logos School, the Leaders program was developed in Missouri in 2009, and reflects Peabody's commitment to make a positive impact in the communities where the company's employees live and work by honoring those who inspire students.
