Couch Avenue needs repairs
That new retirement home on Couch Avenue. It looks like they did a good job, but they need now to come and repair Couch Avenue. All the humps and bumps and holes and all the big trucks that went to construct that. They should come out and fix it. That should be the job of that nursing home. They're the ones that tore it up.
Elephants crying?
Dr. Fox's column the other day was a bit upsetting to me. He wrote that some animals cry. The part about the poor, dear elephants crying tears when beaten is beyond my comprehension, I guess. I wonder how other readers felt when they read that. But perhaps nobody cares.
Lights out
Don't spend your tax dollars in Richmond Heights. They clearly have an administrative issue with the operating of their city. All the street lights are out between Wise and Ethel on Bellevue. There's like five or six. It's been months since they've been out. I just noticed street lights are even out in front of the former mayor's house on Bellevue, like the 1400 block of Bellevue. Two or three that aren't working. Why do they have aldermen? Is it up to the citizens to report that. I would think it would be up to public works or the aldermen or someone like that to report it.
Where are the building inspectors?
A footnote: 1640 Yale has had a broken chair sitting in front of their apartment door for like three months. Where are the Richmond Heights building inspectors? Are they doing their jobs? Are they sleeping during the day? What's going on?
Pit bull discrimination
I was reading the paper and I was appalled and saddened when I read about the park in Chesterfield that does not like pit bulls. That's a shame. Are they discriminating against everybody and everything now. I mean we discriminate against people; we discriminate against races; we discriminate against animals. It depends on how a person trains an animal. If they receive love, they give back love. If they're beaten and abused, how do you think they'll act? They shouldn't punish an animal because it's the human being that's responsible, not the animal. That's too bad. If those people in Chesterfield can't accept an animal in their park, who are they going to expect.
Pit bullish
I was dumbfounded as I read Steve Pokin's article on Chesterfield's pit bull ban. Does becoming a mayor or council member qualify you as a dog expert or would you need to consult the real authorities on the subject? If you took the advice of veterinarians, the Humane Society, the American Kennel Club, the Animal Protective Association, and even the American Society of Pediatrics, you would realize dog breed bans are ludicrous. As Randy Grimm of Stray Rescue stated in the article, "any dog can be dangerous, and on the other side of the coin, any dog has the ability to become a great companion." Kudos to the pit bull owners who left Chesterfield after this ridiculous ban.
Editor's note: Pit bulls are banned from the dog park at Chesterfield's Eberwein Park. The city allows the dogs, but requires owners to register them, post warning signs outside the house and meet other requirements.
Powerball claims false
The new Missouri Powerball claims there's going to be more millionaires in Missouri with this $2 ticket for Powerball. If you go to missourilotto.com, you'll see there's no new millionaires yet. Don't be going crazy on the Powerball. Don't break yourselves, people.
Parade for all wars better
You know that parade downtown for the veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a wonderful thing. But I think it would have been better if it had been a parade for all wars. The World War II veterans never got a parade. They never got a bonus. They didn't get a memorial until nearly 60 years later. So if there was ever a forgotten war, it was World War II. And there's not a lot of them left.
Snake oil, anyone?
Romney is a perfect example of a modern day snake oil salesman. Exactly the same type.
Prayer books, bars
Two things in this country are doing real well: Churches and penitentiaries. That ought to tell you something about what's going on in this country.
Leave town, Rams
To me the Rams have always been the L.A. Rams. They don't belong here. I hope they go back to L.A. or somewhere else. I don't believe they belong here at all. St. Louis should have its own team, not be taking a team out of another city. I just hope they leave.
Simple economics
You want to know why the Dairy Queen closed in South County? Because they opened a new and improved one about 10 blocks away. So they didn't go out of business, they just got a new updated restaurant that's better than the one on Lemay Ferry Road. And the reason the bar closed was
because they charge a $10 cover charge to go in any time of the day and night. Who wants to pay a $10 cover charge just to go into a bar and have a drink? You might as well get a country club membership for that price. South County, the businesses that are good will be here, but the business that are bad will go under. Look at the new Golden Corral on South Lindbergh Boulevard, you can't even get in that place, and they all bus in from the city. Like (radio broadcaster) Jim White said, you can't fix stupid.
Technology overstated
I really wish companies would stop calling me to bundle my stuff. I don't own a computer; I don't have cable; and I don't even own a cell phone. I still read the paper. I watch regular national news, and I seem to know a lot more than my friends and relatives about what is going on in the world, As a matter of fact, they often ask me about politics and other topics of general interest. I truly don't believe technology has made people smarter. They just seem to be more in debt and less aware of what is going on around them. I could be wrong, but I truly believe that is true.
Take down stop signs
Is there anybody who can take these stop signs down on Black Forest from Telegraph to Baumgartner? No one stops at them. And the speed's limit 25, and no one does 25 mph. They have to get to work in the morning and they go 35 to 50 mph.
