A Parkway West High School wrestling coach has been charged with several sex crimes involving a female student.
Police arrested Jason Lewis, 28, of O'Fallon, Mo., Wednesday following an investigation into reports of alleged sexual misconduct with a girl in early 2010, Police Chief Ray Johnson said in a press release.
Lewis was charged with three counts each of second- degree statutory rape and sexual contact with a student while on public school property, and five counts of second-degree statutory sodomy, Johnson said.
He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond, Johnson said.
Lewis, who was not a teacher, was employed as a high school wrestling coach by the Parkway School District since 2008.
Parkway's security department received a tip Monday via a 24-hour security hotline that a West High School employee may have been involved in inappropriate sexual activity with a student, Jeremy Mitchell, Parkway West principal, told parents and staff in a letter sent out Wednesday.
"We immediately began an investigation and reported the matter to our SRO (school resource officer) and the Chesterfield Police Department," he wrote.
"The individual in question has been removed from school and suspended without pay," he wrote.
Mitchell called the incident 'surprising and obviously deeply concerning because nothing is more important to us than the safety of your children."
Since the fall of 2008, Lewis has served as a
wrestling coach and study hall teaching assistant at West High, Mitchell wrote.
"As with all new employees, a thorough police background check was completed in August 2008 revealing no previous instances of misconduct. While the police are still gathering the facts, we do not believe anyone else was involved," Mitchell wrote.
He said counselors have been made available for any student who might need them.
