One-on-one basketball training

Coach Jamal Thompson is offering private, one-on-one basketball training sessions at the Renaud Spirit Center, 2650 Tri Sports Circle in O'Fallon.

Thompson is a graduate of Harlan Community Academy where he was an All-Conference basketball player. He is the junior varsity girls' basketball coach at Fort Zumwalt South High School.

Thompson is available to train both boys and girls ages 7 and up in ball handling, footwork, shooting, rebounding and more.

Cost for O'Fallon residents (individuals) is $40 for one 50-minute session or $175 for five 50-minute sessions and for non-residents (individuals) $45 for one 50-minute session or $194 for five 50-minute sessions. There is an option to do group training, for two players, and the cost for O'Fallon residents is $30 per player for one 50-minute session or $120 per player for five 50-minute sessions and for non-residents $34 per player for one 50-minute session or $133 per player for five 50-minute sessions.

SCC announces Black History Month events

St. Charles Community College will host a variety of events in honor of Black History Month. Event is free and open to the public. Event will take place in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building (unless otherwise noted), 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, Cottleville.

The film, "Throw Down Your Heart," will screen at 7 p.m. Feb. 23.

Still life exhibit at Lindenwood

Lindenwood's J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts will feature Reflections, the latest exhibition by Zeuxis from Feb. 23 through March 18 in the Boyle Family Gallery, 2300 W. Clay St. in St. Charles.

There will be an opening reception from 4-7 p.m. Feb. 23.

Zeuxis is a grassroots organization of painters formed in 1995 to explore the contemporary possibilities of the still life. For the Reflections exhibit, the artists have produced a still life incorporating a reflecting object. There are over 60 paintings in oil, watercolor or casein in the exhibit.

Watermedia Floral workshop

Artist Shirley Nachtrieb will host a workshop, Watermedia Floral, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, 1 St. Peters Centre Blvd.

Using a palette of three fluid colors participants will develop a spring floral composition on a prepared textural surface. The first colors of spring will be reviewed in this class. Artists of all skill levels are welcome.

Appraisal fair returns to St. Peters

The city of St. Peters will host the "That Old Thing" Appraisal Fair from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 26 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, 1 St. Peters Centre Blvd.

Area residents may bring up to two items to be appraised for free by professional appraisers. Items you may bring include old toys, trains, political items, military items, old photographs and postcards, old pottery and glassware, antique books, sterling silver, Native American items, coins, old sports and sporting items, documents, famous autographs, old paintings, and costume and fine jewelry. Firearms and items too large to carry will not be permitted.

The fair is open to the public; however, St. Peters residents that bring a Resident Privilege Card will receive priority tickets when the doors open.

Quilting workshop for students

A quilting workshop will take place from 10 a.m.-noon March 3 and 10 at the Foundry Art Centre, 520 N. Main Center in St. Charles. The workshop is open to students in grades 4-8.

Participants will explore the art style of noted artist and children's author Faith Ringgold through her story quilt artworks. In this two-part workshop, students will create their own story quilts on muslin cloth showing a story about a personal memory.

Shelley Geiger will be the instructor.

Cost is $35 for Foundry Art Centre members or $40 for non-members.

Enrichment workshops at Foundry

The Teacher Enrichment Workshop will take place from 5:45-7 p.m. March 6 and April 3 at the Foundry Art Centre, 520 N. Main Center in St. Charles. The workshops are specifically designed for art teachers and offer hands-on activities for teachers to take back to their art classroom.

Instructor Fran Null, with over 30 years of elementary art instruction experience, will present fresh ideas loaded with lots of twists and possibilities. Participants will leave with completed projects and a packet of handouts.

Cost is $10 per workshop for Foundry Art Centre members and $12 per workshop for non-members.

Each workshop has a specific theme.

Hip Hop dance classes

There will be hip hop dance classes offered for students ages 8 and up from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, beginning March 7 at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, 1 St. Peters Centre Blvd.

The classes will be taught in a simple but effective way. Moves will be broken down into fun and easy-to-learn steps.

The sessions begin with basic warm-up and break down into a hip hop combo. This class is for inexperienced or experienced dancers.

Classes are ongoing and cost is $10 per session.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

Genealogy classes make a comeback

Advanced genealogy classes will take place from 1-3 p.m. or 6-8 p.m. March 13 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, 1 St. Peters Centre Blvd. This class will provide information to help participants to overcome any obstacles that they might endure along the way.

Cindy DuBois, the city's arts leader and genealogist, will teach the class. DuBois will teach about preserving photographs and sharing them with others. Participants will be encouraged to write their family's story.

Cost is $7 for each class and includes a light dessert.

Spring day trips

The spring itinerary for one-day trips is as follows:

• The Luck O' the Irish trip will take place March 27. Participants will board a motor coach at the Civic Park parking lot in O'Fallon at 8 a.m. and return around 4 p.m.

Participants will take a tour of historic Dogtown, learn Irish traditions, listen to a concert of Irish music at St. James the Greater Catholic Church and eat at Seamus McDaniel's.

Cost is $75 for O'Fallon residents and $84 for non-residents, which includes transportation, tours, admissions, gratuities and lunch.

Registration is required by Feb. 26.

• The Clopping Clydesdales trip will take place April 10. Participants will board a motor coach at the Civic Park parking lot in O'Fallon at 7:30 a.m. and return around 5 p.m.

Participants will visit Warm Springs Ranch in Cooper County, the world headquarters of the Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Clydesdales breeding facility. The trip includes a photo opportunity with a Clydesdale and a sample of beer. Lunch and shopping will take place in Rocheport.

Cost is $75 for O'Fallon residents and $84 for non-residents, which includes transportation, tours, admissions and lunch.

Registration is required by March 11.

• The Dogwood-Azalea Festival trip will take place April 20. Participants will board a motor coach at the Civic Park parking lot in O'Fallon at 7 a.m. and return around 9:30 p.m.

Participants will take a tour of Charleston, where azaleas and dogwoods will be in bloom in nearly every yard. There will be shopping at the Molly French Garden Club plant sale and the UMC quilt show. There will be tours of the Joseph Hunter Moore Home, the Governor Warren Hearnes Museum, the D&R Classic Toy Trains display and two private gardens. A brunch is planned in Charleston and dinner will take place at Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston.

Cost is $83 for O'Fallon residents and $93 for non-residents, which includes transportation, an escort, brunch, dinner, tours and admissions.

Registration is required by March 18.

Spring ArtWalk call for entries

The St. Charles Riverfront Arts announced a call for entry for the 7th Spring ArtWalk event, which will take place April 27 through 29 along North Main Street.

Participating businesses provide display space for the artists and assist in attracting customers and sales. Proceeds from the event will benefit St. Charles Riverfront Arts' efforts to promote visual and performing arts throughout the St. Charles community.

There is no entry fee and no commission on the artists' sales for this artist-friendly event. Work must be submitted no later than March 1.
