Classes

RED CROSS TRAINING: The American Red Cross offers first aid, CPR and AED training at its St. Charles County Service Center, 224 Mid Rivers Center in St. Peters. Participants must pay in advance; no walk-ins accepted. To register, visit www.redcrossstl.org or call 636-397-1074.

• CPR/AED adult training — choose either 8:30-11:30 a.m. March 1 or 6-9 p.m. March 15. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory and cardiac emergencies in people 12 and older. Learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator. Students will receive a CPR/AED-Adult certificate valid for two years. Class costs $70.

• First aid component training — 8:30-11:30 am. March 6. Designed for people with current CPR certification, this course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to an emergency and give care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. The component course includes identifying and treating shock, stroke, diabetic emergencies, heat- and cold-related emergencies, poisoning and allergic reactions. Students will receive a First Aid certificate valid for two years. Class costs $70.

• Standard first aid with CPR/AED training (adult) — choose one of the following options: 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. March 10, or 6-9 p.m. March 28 for part one and 6-9 p.m. March 29 for part two. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory and cardiac emergencies in people older than 12 by providing care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. Learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR, use an AED and other skills. Students will receive a CPR/AED Adult and First Aid certificate valid for two years. Class costs $90.

• Standard first aid with CPR/AED adult and child training plus CPR-infant — 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 17. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in children ages 1-12 and infants. Learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. The second part of the course trains students to recognize and respond to an emergency, and give care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. Includes identifying and treating shock, stroke, diabetic emergencies, heat and cold related emergencies, poisoning and allergic reactions. In addition, learn to control bleeding, care for a muscle, bone or joint injury, and care for a head, neck or back injury. Students will receive a CPR/AED-Adult and Child plus CPR-Infant and a First Aid certificate valid for two years. Class costs $110.

• Baby sitter's training — 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 26. Training includes safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Must be at least 11 years old to register. Class costs $85 (includes participant manual). Bring a sack lunch to class.

BREAST-FEEDING: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers breast-feeding classes for women who are planning to breast-feed and for those who have not yet decided. It is designed for mothers, fathers, grandparents and support persons and includes information on how the breast makes milk, how to establish a good milk supply, avoiding sore nipples and nurturing the breast-feeding family. TAKING CARE OF YOU: BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT: eight-week class on managing stress, 6-7 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 27-April 16, University of Missouri Extension in St. Peters.
