St. Peters plans to start collecting a 2 percent tax on charges for sleeping rooms on July 1.

The Board of Aldermen passed a bill Thursday to collect the gross receipts tax from hotels and motels in the city. The tax received approval from 55 percent of the city's voters in the Feb. 7 election.

Officials said the city would a letter to hotels and motels to inform them they must submit the money collected from the tax to the city by the 20th day of each month.

City officials expect the tax to generate $150,000 to $200,000 in annual revenue. That money will go to the general fund and be used to supplement the Parks and Recreation Department's budget.

Earlier this month, Mayor Len Pagano said some of the money could be used to help maintain the city's 21 miles of trails and for infrastructure improvements to 370 Lakeside Park.
