New lights needed

I read with great interest the (Opinion Shaper column) from Steve Powell, talking about the gaslights (in the South Main Historic District). I was down there in December for the Christmas Traditions one night, and it was so dark you could hardly see. They really do need to replace some of the lights with those new lights. It would certainly contribute to a lot of people being able to see at night.

Waste of money

The new fire station proposed in St. Peters by Central County Fire and Rescue is a waste of our money. This station will not improve safety. Using the E911 technology or an integrated system instead of the current 911 system will eliminate the need to transfer calls and will reduce response times by fire stations, ambulances and police.

Misused words

Nice going, Scott Beck, with your column on misusing words. Now I get to be heard. It's toward and upward, not towards and upwards. All history is past history. It's amazing how many people don't know about silent letters, like the "l" in almond, calm and palm. It isn't safety deposit box, it's safe deposit box. "See if I can't" is pretty dumb. And finally, why say underneath instead of under? Thanks, Scott.

Better grammar

Hopefully Scott Beck has opened the floodgates of better grammar. My favorites are February, not Febuary; a whole other; it's quash, not squash; daylight saving time, not savings. It's water heater, not hot water heater. A long ways to go is a long way to go. Likewise, it's anyway, not anyways.

Pays to be honest

This is for the person who gets frustrated with the word "assume." Maybe if the person was honest and truthful, we would not have to assume things that affect our daily lives. And it does pay to be honest.

Fix water problem

I read that the hotel tax passed for St. Peters and they were going to spend some money to plant trees in Lakeside 370 Park. I wish they would give us our Rabbit Run Park and adjoining parks back, I wish they would solve the water problem there. This used to not happen. I've got no desire to go down to Lakeside 370. That will be a very nice park, but more people are within walking distance of Rabbit Run and adjoining parks. It would be more practical to fix the water problem. When they built there, they said water won't be a problem, we've got a detention pond. But in the first part of February when it rained, we had water all over the place, and this was not from creek flooding. Apparently the engineers got something wrong, and we'd like to see this corrected. We don't have to plant trees. We've got nice big trees, let's save them. We've got a natural waterway, we've got wildlife. Let's save and improve on what we've got.

You bought it, you trim it

This is in response to (a Sound Off comment in the Feb. 15 Journal about) AmerenUE mutilating trees. First of all, trees should not be planted under UE lines. If they were there before you and you bought the land, you bought the tree. Take it down, trim it yourself, don't expect Ameren to do it for you. If it's on city land, the city needs to trim it or remove it.

Good idea

I want to congratulate the Journal and the Post-Dispatch for teaming up. I get both papers, and I noticed they've been delivering both in one package. I think that's a very good idea. I know these are days of declining newspaper business, but I'm still old die-hard and like reading both. I still like getting them at the door. Thank you and keep it up.
