University of Wisconsin-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve • The 300-acre preserve offers bike and walking trails. Writer John Muir lived next to the reserve, and conservationist Aldo Leopold taught there. Free admission; lakeshorepreserve.wisc.edu

University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum • 1207 Seminole Highway. The 1,200-acre research arboretum borders the southern half of Lake Wingra and features horticultural collections, effigy mounds, historic artifacts, a visitors center and more than 20 miles of trails. The arboretum offers frequent public tours and family activities. Free admission; uwarboretum.org
