River Inn of Harbor Town

Where • 50 Harbor Town Square

More inforiverinnmemphis.com or 1-901-260-3333

The hotel • Although it's just a mile or so from downtown, the River Inn is a world away, in a residential development overlooking the Mississippi River. A walking/running/biking path paralleling the river is across the street. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. The staff was accommodating and friendly, offering me a glass of champagne when I checked in. When I regretted that I didn't have time to enjoy it, they told me to let them know whenever I was ready. For a nightcap, a housekeeper brings port wine and chocolates to every guest.

My room • I stayed in a top-floor junior suite with a river view, a sitting room and a four-poster king-size bed. Both rooms had flat-screen televisions. The spacious bathroom had a shower and a deep tub. The décor was tasteful and traditional.

Pricing • For a Saturday night in mid-July, undiscounted rates range from $245 to $550 and include breakfast in the hotel's restaurant. Weekend packages, some including cooking classes, are also available.

SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown

Where • 21 North Main Street

More infomarriott.com (SpringHill Suites is a Marriott brand) or 1-901-522-2100.

The hotel • My daughter met me for the last two days of my three-day trip, and she asked to stay in a hotel with an outdoor pool. We chose SpringHill Suites, which is centrally located and within walking distance of many attractions. A downtown trolley runs down Main Street, providing easy access to restaurants, Beale Street, museums and even the farmers market. Valet and self-parking at the hotel is $12 a day (if you choose valet, be aware that you might have a long wait for your car). Wi-Fi is free. The staff was friendly and (except for some of the valets) efficient.

My room • Our room was divided by a floor-to-ceiling half-wall. One portion of the room held a sofa bed and kitchenette, complete with small refrigerator, microwave and sink. The other portion had a king-size bed and small dresser. The bathroom was small but adequate. A flat-screen television could be watched from either side of the room.

Pricing • For a Saturday night in mid-July, undiscounted rates range from $149 to $169 and include a full buffet breakfast.
