Summer is here, and that means heading out to take in the long, sunny days in Benton County, Missouri. Located between Kansas City and St. Louis, Benton County is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with stunning lakes, quaint historic towns, the dramatic meeting of the Ozarks and the great open prairies, miles of hiking trails and so much more!

In fact, there is so much to experience in Benton County you might need help narrowing down your options. So here’s a list of the top five activities to consider when planning your visit this summer.

1. The lakes

Benton County, Missouri, is not only located in between the state’s biggest cities, but also two of Missouri’s great lakes: Truman Lake and the Lake of the Ozarks. The two lakes combined include 110,000 acres of water, with plenty of fun awaiting one and all! Whether it’s the lure of netting a largemouth bass, cruising around the lakes on a sailboat or yacht, or going for a relaxing swim at the end of the day, the possibilities are as abundant as the lakes themselves.

2. Outdoor recreation

Truman Lake and the Lake of the Ozarks aren’t the only options when it comes to the great outdoors in Benton County. Whether you're here for only the weekend or the entire week, the possibilities are only limited by the hours in the day. Hunters can set their sights on a variety of game, including deer, turkey and quail. Meanwhile, hikers and cyclists can check out Truman Lake Mountain Bike Park, which offers 22 miles of challenging yet breathtaking terrain. For those looking for a relaxing walk or bike ride on the riverfront, Drake Harbor offers a series of trails that lead to the Joe Dice Swinging Bridge and Truman Dam. In addition, visitors can access the beautiful Steamboat Landing boardwalk by way of Osage Trail, one of the many riverfront trails found at Drake Harbor. And if serenity is needed, Benton County offers some of the best bird-watching and wildlife viewing in the state.

3. Historical attractions

That’s not to say civilization doesn’t have its perks in Benton County. When it comes to historical attractions, the town of Warsaw boasts a portal into its past via the Pioneer Village, which is home to the annual Warsaw Pioneer Heritage Days festival every October. The Benton County Museum allows visitors to experience what it was like to ride the rivers through its extensive steamboat history exhibit and offers an impressive display of artifacts that truly capture the rich culture of Benton County from its origins in the 1800s to the present.

Over in Cole Camp, the German Immigrant Memorial pays tribute to the many German immigrants who made Missouri their home in the 1830s. The Cole Camp Museum offers an engaging walk-through experience beginning with the history of Cole Camp that leads to a large display of Native American artifacts from the tribes that inhabited the area before the arrival of new settlers.

Perched atop Kaysinger Bluff, the Harry S. Truman Dam Visitor Center provides a breathtaking view of the Truman Dam and houses exhibits that educate visitors of all ages about the rich history of the Osage Arm of Lake of the Ozarks Valley. The observation deck serves as a perfect photo opportunity, not to mention a great vantage point to view waterfowl, bald eagles and turkey vultures.

4. Get out the nine iron

There’s nothing like starting the day with a round of nine or 18 holes. Shawnee Bend features a course as challenging as the biggest venues on the professional golf tour, while Triple Creek near Cole Camp is a dream-like setting with wide, lush zoysia fairways.

5. Take in the sunset on a river kayak tour

Whether you're looking to book a river kayaking tour or rent out mountain bikes for a day of family fun, Warsaw Adventures has got you covered. Visitors can book a sunset kayaking tour with one of the trained river guides, rent out equipment such as bikes and paddleboards, and stock up on drinks and snacks before heading out for their day of outdoor fun.
