New Balance Athletics opened on Tuesday its 165,000-square-foot distribution center at 13600 Shoreline Drive in Earth City.

Boston-based New Balance said the new facility is needed to support its growing e-commerce business. Three dozen people will work at the Earth City building to process as many as 60,000 orders monthly from NewBalance.com customers for shoes, clothing and accessories, the company said.

Kevin Holian, a New Balance vice president, said in a statement the selection of Earth City for the facility was based on its location and ability to retain the company's experienced staff from its former facility in Fenton.

New Balance Athletics acquired NewBalance.com in 2008. About 200 people work at the company's Sunset Hills office to support the brand's website.
