Spec-Rite Designs, a St. Louis company that makes and distributes phenolic furnishings, plans to double the size of its plant and offices at 1054 Central Industrial Drive.

The company says the $250,000 expansion also could produce about five new jobs. Construction should begin next month and be done next year, Spec-Rite says.

Phenolic? That's a term for a hard material produced in sheets by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper or glass cloth impregnated with synthetic resin.

Spec-Rite says it's planning a new 10,000-square-foot warehouse and a 5,000-square-foot office expansion that will house administrative and operations space. Company officials said the expansion is needed to meet the demand for phenolic lockers, furniture, cabinets, partitions and wall lining.

MHS Legacy Group, Spec-Rite's parent company, is financing the expansion, Spec-Rite says.
