When 25 entrepreneurs compete Sunday in an Austin, Texas, Startup of the Year competition, a name familiar to St. Louis restaurant diners will be among them.

GiftAMeal, whose mobile app donates a meal to charity when users dine at a participating restaurant, was chosen to compete at the event, which is part of Austin's South by Southwest festival, along with startups from around the country.

Andrew Glantz, who founded GiftAMeal in 2014 when he was a student at Washington University, said in a statement that the contest is an opportunity "to build on a great year of growth." The company raised $165,000 in capital last fall and won a 2018 Arch Grant.

More than 150 restaurants in St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit participate in the food-donation program. In St. Louis, the donations go to Operation Food Search.
