Good News Brewing Co., the craft beermaker that opened just more than a year ago in O'Fallon, Mo., has plans for a second brewery.

Co-owner Dan Tripp said Good News has the Trail Smokehouse building in Defiance, at 2886 South Highway 94, under contract. Tripp said he hopes to close on the real estate transaction before the end of the year and open the second brewery in the spring of 2019. Trail Smokehouse, which sits near the Katy Trail, opened in June 2015 but closed earlier this year.

The new brewery, if opened, will let Good News increase its production from 360 barrels a year to approximately 1,600 barrels.

"We were selling more beer than we could make and we've had to contract brew (to meet demand)," Tripp said. "It's really taken off. O'Fallon has been desperate for a brewery — it's a town of 90,000 people and we're the first brewpub."

Tripp said Good News also plans to open a spin-off coffee shop called Alpha and Omega Roasting in O'Fallon later this year that will serve coffee and dessert-style beers, such as Good News' popular Hazelnut Coffee Milk Stout and other stouts or coffee-infused beers.

Good News began in a Bible-study class, where homebrewers Tripp and Matt Fair met. Fair met another homebrewer, Josh Miller, and the three men started brewing together.

Good News’ small O'Fallon storefront, at 330 Sonderen Street, also includes a wood-fired oven and a brief menu of pizzas.

Since 2008, the number of craft breweries operating in St. Louis has more than quadrupled from 12 to 52, according to a recent report from real estate firm CBRE. Production from those breweries grew even more quickly during that time, from nearly 31,000 barrels annually to more than 143,000, a 365 percent increase.

New breweries have typically been located in the city of St. Louis' limits, but have gradually spread outward in all directions. Several new craft breweries opening in St. Charles County over the last few years, such as Third Wheel Brewing, Friendship Brewing and Two Plumbers Brewery, as well as Good News. More, such as upstart Petrichor Brewing, appear on the way.
