Post Holdings on Monday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $72.5 million, or $1.21 per share. That compared favorably to a loss of $287.4 million, or $5.86 per share, in the year-earlier period.

The Brentwood-based company, diversifying as a result of the weakening breakfast cereal market, has been on a buying spree in recent years.

Costs of acquisitions contributed to recent profit declines but led to higher sales.

Fourth-quarter sales rose 26 percent to $1.31 billion, the company said.

The company reported results after the market close. Earlier, its shares fell $1.39, or 2.2 percent, to close at $61.99.
