Car sharing service Zipcar is expanding in the backyard of competitor Enterprise Holdings with hourly vehicles available for rent at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Zipcar, which was acquired by Avis Budget Group earlier this year, has added its first vehicles in the St. Louis region, the company said Tuesday.

Car sharing allows customers to rent a vehicle for hours at a time without visiting a rental car branch office. Zipcar's rentals -- located on Avis' car rental lot at Lambert -- start at $9 an hour, which includes gas and insurance.

Zipcar said its expansion at Lambert is designed for business travelers who need to make a short trip by car or those stuck at the airport for a few hours who want to get around.

Clayton-based Enterprise Holdings, the world's largest rental car company, competes with Zipcar with its Enterprise CarShare business. Enterprise has expanded its CarShare business across the country in recent years, including in St. Louis, New York City and Boston. Last month, Enterprise CarShare launched services in New Jersey, and is now available in nearly 20 major cities.
