This pair of big, white bunnies keeps watch over a shady corner of Citygarden downtown. The pieces are a favorite among children, who love to climb onto them. It’s a bit tough to imagine, but these figures are made of bronze, a material traditionally used in sculpture. The white painted coating creates “the impression of marshmallowy lightness,” according to a description from the Gateway Foundation, which owns the sculptures and maintains the site in a partnership with the city of St. Louis.
The rabbits do dress up for their biggest holiday of the year, Easter, when they don necklaces made of brightly colored plastic eggs. A spokesman says the rabbits did once disappear once from the garden — when they got fresh white paint jobs at an auto-body shop.
