Midwest Book Awards, IPPYs honor local authors


Independent publishers and some local authors were honored Friday at the Midwest Book Awards and earlier with IPPY awards.

At the 37th annual Midwest awards, given Friday night at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., Cynthia A. Graham won a best mystery/thriller award for "Behind Every Door," published by Blank Slate Press in St. Louis.

In the fantasy/scifi/horror/paranormal category, Nicole Evelina won for her self-published book, "Daughter of Destiny." She also won in romance for "Been Searching for You."  Her company is called Lawson Gartner Publishing and is in Maryland Heights.

The 2017 IPPY Awards, which focus on independent publishers, including academic publishers, last month announced gold medals in historical fiction and fiction cover design for "Margaret​ ​the​ ​First"​ ​by​ ​St. Louisan Danielle​ ​Dutton​ ​(Catapult).

A gold medal also went to "Painting by Numbers: How to Sharpen Your BS Detector and Smoke Out the 'Experts'” by Jason Makansi (Layla Dog Press). Makansi moved last year from St. Louis to Arizona. The award was given in the category Current Events II: Social Issues/Humanitarian. Layla Dog is an imprint of Blank Slate Communications. Makansi moved last year from St. Louis to Arizona.
