Bakers for Black Lives, a group local pastry chefs created as a response to the heightened national and international civil unrest, held a donation-based bake sale at Vino Gallery in the Central West End. Bakers including Hannah Kerne, former Vicia assistant pastry chef; Tai Davis of Alchemy Bakery; Meaghan Coultrain formerly of Niche Food Group; Sharon Harter of The Bellwether and The Polite Society; and Shimon Otsuka of Nathaniel Reid Bakery donated baked cookies, brownies, cakes, and more. The event opened at 10 a.m. and sold out before noon. Donations are still being tallied, but at publication, the group raised more than $12,000 in two hours. Kerne says the event was put together quickly, and she hopes that more time for organization will allow them to hold another event for Juneteenth. Proceeds will help a variety of local black organizations such as ArchCity Defenders, Campaign Zero, and STL Mutual Aid.
