Cancel the road trip to Memphis. One of that city's most famous restaurants -- famous is in the name, you know -- is now open in Maplewood.

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken opened softly over the weekend at 7434 Manchester Road, though Tuesday is the official opening day. Gus's fried chicken dates back to 1953, per the restaurant's own history. Current owner Wendy McCrory this year revealed ambitious plans to expand the chain beyond its traditional home in the South to markets including St. Louis, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Jane Zimmerman, who is operating the St. Louis franchise with her husband, Jim, says that staff from Gus's in Memphis are on hand to help open the restaurant. They are not here merely for opening day.

"We have an opening team here for several weeks," Zimmerman says. "They rented two homes here in Maplewood."

The restaurant's regular hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The phone number is 314-899-9899.
