Salt + Smoke in U-City reviewed

Acclaimed barbecue restaurant Salt + Smoke will open a second location in the former Del Pietro's and Mathew's Kitchen building at 5625 Hampton Avenue in the city's St. Louis Hills neighborhood, as St. Louis Magazine first reported.

"It's such a perfect spot for a Salt + Smoke," owner Tom Schmidt tells Off the Menu about both the neighborhood and the building.

The kitchen is larger than the one at the original Salt + Smoke in the Delmar Loop, so the building will be the base for Salt + Smoke's large-format catering operations and private events.

"The parking lot is huge," Schmidt says. "It allows us to add smokers as we need them."

The menu will be the same as at the Delmar Loop location, with Haley Riley serving as chef and pitmaster of both locations. In fact, Riley is also now a part-owner of Salt + Smoke.

"None of this would have happened without (Riley)," Schmidt says. "He definitely deserves it. For me, it's great to have a full partner in the business."

The building will undergo a thorough renovation to give the space, which was expanded several times during Del Pietro's long run, a cohesive look. Schmidt hopes to be open by June.
