“Ginger and Rosa” ★★★ (PG-13; 1:30) • During the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, the sexual awakening of British teen (the precocious, perceptive Elle Fanning) walks hand-in-hand with her growing social consciousness. Co-starring Alice Englert as her forthright best friend and Alessandro Nivolo as her philandering father, it’s a coming-of-age drama of admirable complexity and character development. (Joe Williams)
“Trance” ★★ (R; 1:41) • After London auctioneer James McAvoy is robbed of a priceless painting and his memory, this heist thriller turns into an alternate-reality talkfest, as hypnotist Rosario Dawson tries to help him solve the crime. Director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) uses slick visuals in a vain attempt to distract us from the preposterous script. (JW)
