Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence)

At 16, Katniss has been hunting and foraging to feed her family since her father's death. She's extremely protective of both her depressed mother (Paula Malcomson) and her younger sister.

Fun fact! "Katniss" is an edible water root; her father, who named her, said that if she could find herself, she'd never starve.

Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth)

Katniss' best friend and hunting partner (he's 2 years older) lost his dad in the same mine accident that killed Katniss' father. He supports his mother and three younger siblings.

Fun fact! Gale's nickname for Katniss is "Catnip."

Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson)

The baker's son, Peeta once saved Katniss' starving family by deliberately burning bread and throwing it out.

Fun fact! Spelled differently, Peeta is a kind of bread.

Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson)

Haymitch won the Hunger Games 24 years earlier and has been drinking heavily ever since. He reluctantly becomes the new players' mentor.

Fun fact! Coaching Katniss, Haymitch tells her she has the charm of a dead slug.

Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields)

Katniss' little sister, called Prim, is 12, small and delicate but tougher than she looks.

Fun fact! Like Katniss, Primrose is named for a plant.

Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks)

Effie is assigned by the Capitol to chaperone the Hunger Games entrants from District 12.

Fun fact! Effie has hair of many colors, often bright pink.

Cinna (Lenny Kravitz)

Katniss' stylist creates her signature "Girl on Fire" image.

Fun fact! Unlike most Capitol residents, Cinna hasn't undergone extreme cosmetic surgery.

Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci)

The smarmy host of the Hunger Games interviews each contestant and helps to shape public opinion about them.

Fun fact! Flickerman's lips, eyelids and hair are all dyed to match.

President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland)

The president is a cruel dictator who has run the Hunger Games for decades.

Fun fact! Snow always smells like roses — and blood.
