Lauded by BBC Music Magazine as one of the Top 20 live Christmas events in North America, the Bach Society’s annual Christmas Candlelight Concert reinvents itself this year as a virtual event. The always-popular concert includes both previously recorded content and new footage. A VIP ticket includes perks such as a preconcert show hosted by A. Dennis Sparger with a performance by critically acclaimed soprano Mary Wilson, Champagne and a box of festive goodies delivered to your door. Tickets are limited to one per person; only one is needed per household or device.
Diverse holiday programming, both sacred and secular, comes in a variety of inventive and traditional formats. The Bach Society of St. Louis presents its ever-popular Christmas Candlelight Concert online, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra expands its existing digital content with new holiday videos. From live, socially distanced, in-person concerts to virtual programing, there’s sure to be something for every classical holiday music lover.
Performed live (without a seated audience) from the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, the free Christmas at the Cathedral Concert features executive director tenor Scott Kennebeck, the St. Louis Archdiocesan Handbell Choir and Rosati-Kain High School R-K Voices. The concert will be livestreamed on the Cathedral Basilica website and on YouTube and Facebook. Donations can be made at ccstl.org during the concert; proceeds will benefit Catholic Charities of St. Louis.
The Chamber Music Society’s Holiday Celebration concert (aka the Pillsbury Cookie Concert) will be livestreamed from the Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries. The performance features seasonal music by Handel, Telemann, Corelli, Joseph Achron, Bloch, Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi. Masterworks Chorale hosts its first online-only Christmas show, the “Masterworks Christmas Concert With Christine Brewer,” on Dec. 6. The concert will be livestreamed on Facebook and available later on YouTube. In addition, on Dec. 12, to celebrate Tinsel Around Town, the Masterworks Carolers will sing at Fezziwig’s in O’Fallon, Illinois, between 2 and 3 p.m. in the Christmas Courtyard.
OTSL’s new digital programming, the 2020-21 Digital Studio, includes a streaming holiday concert. Featuring family-friendly favorites from traditional carols to popular film music, the concert runs from Dec. 6 to the end of the month.

SLCC artistic director Philip Barnes and assistant conductor Andy Jensen celebrate the season with the many carols written expressly for the chorus over the past three decades. The Christmas “Commissioned” concert takes place at Third Baptist Church in Grand Center. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the in-person concert; ticketholders and subscribers also have the option to view livestream the performance or listen to a podcast version.
The SLSO adds to its current digital content a collection of holiday video performances, “Songs of the Holidays.” The recorded performances will be released on Mondays and Thursdays in December, starting Dec. 7, and highlight musicians from the SLSO, St. Louis Symphony Chorus and In Unison Chorus. Performances include secular tunes and sacred music from a variety of backgrounds. The videos will be available on SLSO digital and social media platforms.
