On Sept. 2, 1994, the Arena held its final event. Our reporter John McGuire called it a fitting end for the old barn.
The Arena was built in 1929 to be the home of livestock shows, but over the following 70 years, it hosted basketball, soccer, hockey, circuses, shows, memorable concerts and more. The building was imploded in 1999 after construction of the Kiel Center downtown.
When Carman Licciardello, twice named Christian Artist of the Year by Billboard magazine sang and preached at the Arena the night of Sept. 2, 1994, that was the end for a building that began as an exhibition hall for dairy cows.
Our article called the altar call for people who wanted to accept Jesus as the Lord "a fittingly symbolic end."
