Look Back: Great Flood of 1993
A view of flooding along the lower River Des Peres on July 19, after the emergency floodwall failed. In the foreground is Alabama Avenue on the city side of the river, which covers the Lemay Ferry bridge. On the right is the old Lemay, or Luxembourg neighborhood, on the county side. The federal buyout program eventually bought most of the homes and buildings that were flooded by backwater rising from the Mississippi River, visible in the far background. Old Lemay became a St. Louis County Park. (Jerry Naunheim Jr./Post-Dispatch)
