Maxine Clark, the woman who founded Build-a-Bear Workshop almost 20 years ago, will be inducted Friday into the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame.

Clark, a St. Louis native, founded the teddy-bear themed business in 1997. There are now more than 400 stores around the world. She also is the author of "The Bear Necessities of Business: Building a Company with Heart."

In June 2013, Clark stepped down from her chief executive role at Build-a-Bear to focus on improving public education. She also is a managing partner of Prosper Women’s Capital, a fund created to invest in women-owned businesses in the St. Louis area.

The ceremony will be Friday at Missouri State University in Springfield.
