Tip of the pen to Carol Swartout Klein, of Ferguson, who won the first Jerry Paul Youth Advocacy Award from Neighborhood Houses, an organization that supports low-income children and families.

Klein, award-winning author of the children’s book “Painting for Peace in Ferguson,” was lauded for her efforts to help area children. The book consists of a poem and photographs of the artwork that was created on boarded-up windows in Ferguson and St. Louis during the civil unrest in 2014.

The award was established earlier this year to honor the late Rev. Jerry Paul, a former board member and founder of Deaconess Foundation System.
